The Colorado Indigenous Peoples Day Organization (CIPD) was established to educate, organize, and advocate for justice for Indigenous peoples by starting a deeper conversation with the State of Colorado and the United States of America about how to tell the truth about our history and how to address the effects this history has in our current moment.

CIPD emerged from the annual Boulder Valley Indigenous Peoples Day Pow Wow, Indigenous market and parade, which was formally established in 2018 after a resolution was passed by Boulder City Council on Aug. 2, 2016 that officially recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day was first proposed by Native representatives at a United Nations Indigenous Conference in Geneva in 1977. South Dakota passed a resolution to celebrate Native American Day in 1989, and Berkeley, California instituted the first Indigenous Peoples Day in 1992. In recent years, the Indigenous Peoples Day movement has been rapidly gathering momentum nationwide with 160 cities and universities in 41 US states and counting having joined them. Indigenous Peoples Day is also celebrated in numerous communities by groups, organizations, schools, tribes and friends.

In Colorado, Aspen, Boulder, Carbondale, Colorado Springs, Crested Butte, Denver, Durango, and Gunnison have all passed resolutions within the past five years.

With your help, we will continue our work to establish Indigenous Peoples Day across Colorado while supporting Colorado’s Indigenous communities and advocating for their needs: providing essential resources for the Boulder Valley Indigenous Peoples Day Pow Wow and all those participating; collaborating on programming and education initiatives with Indigenous communities, organizations and students across the state; and developing community-based initiatives designed to build a better future for the next seven generations of Indigenous peoples in Colorado through solidarity, ceremony, and advocacy.
